Autographed Guitars: How to Avoid Professional Forgeries

Posted on October 10, 2008 @ 3:28 am

There are many authentic autographed guitars in the world, but there are probably two to three times as many fake ones out here as well. It can be difficult to prove the legitimacy of a signature, and many people are making a living of selling their fake signed items, and not caring if people wonder if they are legitimate or not.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of memorabilia experts and handwriting analysts out there that are fighting to debunk the world of autographed fakes, but there are thousands of people that have spent their lives dedicated to the art of perfecting a fake signature.

Autographed guitars are one of the rarest pieces to obtain in the autograph industry, because they are hard to get signed. Many artists have no problem signing albums, CD’s, posters and other small scale items. To have an artist sign a guitar is a greater accomplishment than any other item obtained.

However, authentic autographed guitars do exist, if you know where to find them. About 75% or more of autographed items found online are considered fake. These can be forgeries, copies or even just advertisements with no genuine memorabilia to back them up.

Many memorabilia dealers and collectors are banding together in an attempt to stop the people who are succeeding without consequence at selling this fake material. However, the fraud artists do still exist, and will continue as long as they are profiting from their scams.

Many people get overexcited when they see a signed item from their favorite artist. They often don’t take the necessary steps and research to determine if the item is legit that they are purchasing. In many cases they just take the seller’s advice and continue to spend the money on something that may be possibly not genuine.

If you are interested in purchasing authentic autographed guitars, you need to make sure the dealer is reputable, and the signed item is certified or has some kind of proof backing this item up. If for any reason you are not certain, walk away from the purchase and find another dealer.

When it comes down to spending lots of money on signed memorabilia, make sure its 100% authentic, so it’s worth the investment. Authenticity is always important when is comes down to collecting and buying autographed guitars. There are many scam artists and forgeries that are circulating the market and you can never be too careful viewing the legitimacy of signatures on signed memorabilia. All the Best Mark Turgeon
