Candidiasis is an infection caused by fungi or yeast. A yeast infection happens when the usual balance in the body changes and the yeast overgrow.

Fungi are part of our normal lives, they thrive on all surfaces of our bodies. They become a problem when they become so numerous they cause infections, particularly in warm and moist areas of our bodies. When they get out of control they cause infections like vaginal yeast infections, thrush, rashes on the skin, diaper rash, and infections of the nailbed.

There are more than 20 species of Candida, the most common is Candida albicans. Candida albicans is normally present on the skin and in mucous membranes such as the vagina, mouth, or rectum. Yeast is a part of the human gut flora; they have evolved with us over a very long time. We need them, gut flora lives in symbiosis with humans. Our bowels provide them with an environment they can live in. In exchange for this gut flora synthesizes some vitamins and other essential nutrients. This flora keeps the dangerous disease producing bacteria from flourishing in our bowls.

Overgrowth happens when the natural balance is upset. Yeast infections are common a complaint among women and there are frequent recurrence rates for the condition. Yeast infections are not considered to be sexually transmitted diseases and men do not usually suffer from this disorder. Your doctor may prescribe a single dose of fluconazole (Diflucan) tablet. This cures most vaginal yeast infections and has become a good option for women that have frequent, recurring infections.

Yeast overgrowth may be brought on by use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, clothing which does not allow free ventilation, chlorine in swimming pools, nylon underwear, hot weather, douching and even scented toilet paper, all of which can irritate the vaginal area.

Symptoms of Vaginal Yeast Infection can include vaginal itching, vaginal burning, vaginal irritation, painful urination, painful sexual intercourse and odorless vaginal discharge.

Yeast overgrowth can cause a variety of medical disorders. Candidiasis is considered to be an “opportunistic infection”. This means that yeast found an opportunity to reproduce without restraint. Yeast infections of the mouth, esophagus and vagina occur with high frequency in people with weakened immunity. Yeast overgrowth can cause of chronic ill-health. In severe cases candida can travel through the blood and infect other organs such as lungs, throat, intestines, heart valves, liver and brain. The diagnosis of such infections is easily recognized by taking a specimen from the diseased tissues and doing laboratory tests.

You should not treat yourself for a yeast infection unless you have in the past been diagnosed by a healthcare professional and discussed the treatment. It is always possible you may think you have a yeast infection but actually have a different problem with related symptoms.

Here are some suggestions that you can take to avoid an infection. Steer clear of feminine hygiene sprays and scented douches, which can irritate the urethra. Wear cotton panties because they are best for ventilation. Drink plenty of water and urinate when you feel the need; don’t resist the urge to urinate. Wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria around the anus from entering the vagina or urethra. Take showers instead of baths. Cleanse the genital area before intercourse. Eating a cup of yogurt a day helps prevent overgrowth however; just eating yogurt will not cure a yeast infection.
