If you are building niche sites you will find it is a good idea to start a blog. Your main site may be on a wordpress platform, but starting a blog on another platform will allow you to support your main site with links. How do you start a support blog? Let’s take a look.

A support blog will most likely be started on a free blog platform. There are literally hundreds of places online where you can start a blog to support your main site. The two most well known are probably blogger.com and wordpress.com. These are the two places most people think of when they are starting a blog to support their main site, however it can be beneficial to look to other options as well.

Most beginners take the easy way and build all their support blogs on one network. This is a huge mistake, especially if you haven’t read the terms of service for each platform. This may be easy to keep organized and easy to find, but it can be a huge mistake. Free blog platforms are easy to set up on, but they also own your content. They have the power to delete not only one blog, but your entire account. If you have all of your support blogs on one platform and they decide to delete your account you have nothing to show for your hard work. It’s much better to spread things out over a bunch of sites than to risk everything on one.

When starting a blog to support another site it is also wise to do your support blog on a wider topic or complete niche so you can incorporate more than one niche site. For example, you may have a niche site on something very specific like teaching your golden retriever to stay. That keyword may be great for a niche blog, but it would be great to start your support blog on dogs in general. This gives you a place you can link other dog related sites to. It also gives you more leeway if find someone else’s site you like and want to link back to. It is more likely going to fit in a broader niche blog, than a tightly niched site.

The links you use to point at your main site are the most important thing, they are the reason you are starting a blog on a free platform. You have control over the anchor text of these links and can make sure you get exactly what you want. With that said, make sure your links are created with your keywords as anchor text. This means the actual words underlined that someone clicks on are your keywords. This is what google is looking for when other places link back to your site, the keywords they use in the link.

Creating a support network for your niche sites is a great way to help them improve their search engine rankings. Starting a blog on a free platform is one of the easiest ways to get your support network started. It can seem overwhelming, but remember as you build this network it will be available to you to use on future sites as well.
