Has Corporate Entertaining Costs Gone Too Far?

Keeping corporate clients happy has always been important to big companies, but in these times of recession there is more focus going into this than ever. Contrary to what you might think companies would do in a recession, many are increasing their corporate entertainment spend in order to keep contacts happy. But how much time and finances should be allocated to corporate entertaining these days?

The first thing to remember is that all business relationships are two way streets. Most clients rely on the relationships they have with companies and want to maintain these just as much as anyone else. With this is mind it is really not necessary to break the bank on corporate entertainment. What is much more effective is well thought out events and hospitality.

You may be able to find out what kind of things your guests have done before and enjoyed, which is very valuable information. You will be starting off on the right foot this way as guests will look kindly on the fact you have taken the time and effort to research their preferences.Secondly, avoid booking one form of entertainment and assuming it will make everyone happy. Everyone has different tastes and relying on a single activity to please everyone is a very risky tactic. For example, if you book a corporate entertainment day at Henley Regatta, don’t just get tickets to watch a couple of races. Organise for your guests to have a go in a rowing boat, speak to one of the professional rowers and see some of the sights of Henley. This helps to ensure that the fewest people possible get left out and again makes everyone feel appreciated.

Lastly, ensure that you don’t spend too little on entertaining. As mentioned earlier you should not go over the top with spending, but don’t do everything on the cheap either. You can’t help but insult your contacts by doing this as they will think that you obviously do not value them enough, which kind of defeats the point of the event.
