This time last year, the e-book reader market was like the Wild West – or maybe the gold rush would be a more appropriate metaphor. Following the huge success which Amazon had achieved with its Kindle reader – firstly with the Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009 and then with the large display DX model in the summer of the same year – a small army of personal electronics firms seemed to be developing, releasing or updating e-book readers of their own in order to grab a share of the new and rapidly developing market.

Sony and Barnes and Noble were bursting a gut to get their new readers launched before the 2009 festive season and Samsung, Plastic Logic, Asus and a host of others were rushing to get their readers on the market as fast as they could. The Computer Electronics Show (CES), which took place in Las Vegas in early 2010, had a special zone dedicated to e-book readers for the first time ever. E-book readers were a hot new emerging market.

Today, just a few short months later, the scene is somewhat different. The price of e-book reader hardware has plunged. The latest third generation Kindle now has a Wi-Fi only entry level model available for only $ 139 – less than 40% of the $ 359 price which the Kindle 2.0 launched. The price of the Nook reader from Barnes and Noble has also been slashed to just $ 149 – and a further cut before the festive season arrives seems highly likely.

A number of e-book readers which were in development – including the Que from Plastic Logic – have been abandoned. The market appears to be entering a new phase in its development – whether there will be a place for pure electronic manufacturers in future or not is somewhat debatable. Amazon’s business model is very well suited to selling lower priced readers and making a profit on the ongoing sales of Kindle books. Barnes and Noble could benefit from a similar business model of course, but it’s doubtful if they would be able to take advantage of the same economies of scale as Amazon.

Of course, it would be hopelessly naive to ignore the impact of the Apple iPad in all of this. There’s no doubt that the price of e-book reader hardware was going to fall anyway – but the arrival of the iPad on the scene has certainly hurried things along. However, based on the fact that the third generation Kindles sold out shortly after launch – even today customers are facing a three to four week wait before their Kindles will ship – it doesn’t look as if the iPad is the long awaited Kindle Killer that it was widely predicted to be.

Apart from the debate about e-ink displays being easier to read on than backlit screens, there is – for the moment at least – enough daylight between the price of the Kindle and the price of even the entry level iPad to make the Kindle the more attractive option for anyone whose primary interest is reading books. The monthly connection fees for the iPad will also not be to everyone’s taste.

It does start to look like there is enough room in the market for both the Amazon Kindle and the iPad to co-exist – for the short term future at least. Other e-book reader manufacturers, including Sony and Barnes and Noble, seem destined to struggle as hardware prices will continue to fall.

How to pen a Novel

When I  inform  people I’m a writer, they are almost always impressed. I can’t imagine why. Anyone can write. It’s a abilitycapability knowledge , like performing the piano or painting. Anyone can learn. Take some classes, read some books, but most importantly, write. The best way to learn to write is to write. When I mention declare  that I’m a novelist and write mysteries, romance, romantic suspense, humor, almost everyone says the same thing! “Oh, I could never write compose author    a novel. How you do that?” I have to admit you write a any novel the same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time. Or to quote novelist E.L. Doctorow, “Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can never see further than the headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”

When people still protest avow  that they could never write a novel, it’s such a huge task, it would take too much time! I ask them if they can write one page a day, 250 words. Almost everyone says, that yes, they can do that. Well, 250 pages a day for a year is over 90,000 words, more than enough for a novel. Of course the novel won’t be publishable, you’ll still have to do rewrites, in all likelihood several. If you’re writing a mystery, you might have to add red herrings, or another character. Perhaps you left something…or character hanging. But the main thing is to get those words on paper. You get an idea, maybe noodle around with a character study, perhaps do a rough out crude   quick  outline, but you don’t have to. You can sit right down at the computer or take pen and paper in hand and just write. There is no right or wrong way.

How long does it take to write 250 words? Probably 10 minutes maybe 20. Who doesn’t have 20 minutes to spare everyday? And I’ll bet you a chocolate-covered doughnut that soon you’ll be writing more than a page a day. My goal is 500 words a day, two pages. Sometimes I only write a few paragraphs, but often I will write four or five or six pages. Once I start writing, I enjoy it so much I keep going. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss your goal. The main thing is to have one. When you finish that first draft, leave the manuscript alone for a while, a month or six weeks, as long as you can. Then go back and start re-writing. You’ll be stunned what you find. I always do my final rewrite on paper, not on the computer. You find more mistakes and omissions that way.

So, start now, today. It’s easier than you think believe  and soon you too could be a published novelist.

In the Internet Age, book publishers are having a harder and harder time operating  their company in the black. Even with the addition of such devices as the Kindle and iPad, publishers must do an excellent job picking and then selling each book they publish.

“Obviously, the big publishing houses are facing tremendous challenges,” Fish says. “Their financial viability is very much in question. We need as much innovation and independent spirit as possible.”

Amazon reached an agreement with Penguin over the price  of electronic books on the Kindle e-reader. Penguin is a major book publisher and their dedication was important for the Kindle’s success.

Amazon tried to push  Macmillan by pulling its print and e-book titles from its online bookstore; but when the scheme  failed to reach results they gave into the pressure.
