A good personal friend of mine teaches 5th grade science at a neighborhood elementary school. Among the issues that he really focuses on is attempting to keep the children really interested in science. He realizes that going over theory could make the kids lose interest and he definitely does not want to make the children dislike science at all. He would rather show how science has functional applications and he knows that the kids enjoy things that are fun to observe and in addition they love to get involved in the process. So to find some additional ideas he is always investigating ideas for science lesson plans for elementary school students.
Each year the little ones in his school participate in a science fair and he tries to give the kids a number of great options to select from. There are a great number of science projects for 5th graders and he tries to assist the kids develop ideas that will be fun for them but also not so difficult to finish in a sensible length of time. If the children can complete the project and do something they can be satisfied with they are going to enjoy science rather than be fearful of it or bored to tears because of it.
In addition to the science fair on the list of things my friend wants to do is come up with a project that the entire class will be able to work on as a team. He feels that team building activities for students are very important and he is not just educating them about science but additionally about how to work effectively with others, resolve conflicts and how a team of individuals doing work together can achieve more than a bunch of individuals doing work on an individual basis.
One of the most popular projects he’s worked on with his students is often a classic, the volcano. This project has plenty of components that the children enjoy. It is very hands on and the children take part in every aspect of the building of the volcano and naturally its eruption. Another project that young children have really enjoyed in the past was building a model of the solar system that is displayed around the entire class with the Sun, the Earth, the Moon and every one of the other planets at different points within the class room. Last year the kids even raised some steelhead trout in their classroom and then released them into a nearby creek.
He spends a great deal of time investigating different ideas and coming up with a lot of ideas of his own because he really thinks that making science fun is the ultimate way to keep children interested and he hopes that his students will actually pursue a profession in the field of science.
