Overworked: Good Characteristic or Addiction?

Many people in America work hard, too hard. We might get two to three weeks off in the year, but is that enough? Working hard is a great characteristic, but do question why you’re doing that.

Our quality of life has improved dramatically over the last few generations, but at what cost? Are our lives improved? That’s the question. Is quality of life determined by the size of our house? Or are there less monetary measurements of such quality?

Some questions to ask yourself are: Do you have less time to enjoy your wealth? Do promotions only increase your stress? I’m deeply concerned that all of this work will leave us an empty and unhappy society.

We all know it’s important to spend time with family. But our society doesn’t seem to be rewarding us for this. Our relationships are suffering while we fight the fight to survive financially. My biggest fear is that we’re trying to impress the very people who care the least about us-our employers.

On top of all of that, it appears that most of our hard work and greater productivity is bringing greater wealth to only a few at the top, while those in the lower and middle class are suffering and in want. The disparity between CEO’s and entry-level workers has grown dramatically in recent years.

Overworking also can develop into an addiction, unfortunately. Presently there is no accepted medical definition for such a condition. However, some forms of stress and obsessive-compulsive disorders can be and are work-related.

Some workaholic health-related issues are headaches, fatigue, extreme tiredness, regular sleepiness, continuous irritability, and even panic attacks. Also, plaguing workaholics is a growing resentment about the long hours being worked, as well as the sensation of losing control over their life.

I hope that we’ll change the system. I’m hoping that we’ll work less. I’m hoping that we’ll spend more time on the things that really matter. That’s the kind of quality of life I want.
