In a short and blunt rehearsal of Jane Austen’s classic story about Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, I wish to show my comparison between two films that have been created depicting the romance. Of course it will be the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and the time honored A&E version produced in 1995. This is by no means an attempt to prove one superior to the other, nor is it a thoroughly detailed analysis, but merely a general overview.

The comparison begins with the heroine and star, Elizabeth Bennett. I see beyond the curvacious features of one, versus the stickly figure of the other, and also beyond the composed maturity of one, versus the giggly smirks that often accompany the other. This new story line chose to give Elizabeth a complete desire for secrecy, while A&E more accurately depicts Lizzy quite confident in confiding most of the story with her sister, with a few exception. I feel that was lacking that Keira was not as open and friendly with her sister as the book directs.

Of course with all the characters and their interminglings, 300 minutes to develop them versus only 129 minutes can hardly promote comparison. I feel that of course the lengthier version shows us more feelings and connections of the characters. However, the shorter of the two also allows sufficient scenes to depict the most important and controversial developments of the characters. I was also surprised that 2005′s movie had more accurate dialogue in many scenes, but only in the few scenes they actually followed the dialogue Jane Austen has given us.

One of my favorite characters, that must be singled out is Mr. Collins. Six hours does much more justice to his moronic awkwardness by A&E. The only characteristic that I found comical in the more modern interpretation was that they cast him being very short. A&E was far superior in creating and casting a character with an eloquent way of speaking his nonsense, opposed to the cumbersome stutterings of our “shorter” Mr. Collins.

The music in both movie stands out to me to be both excellent, but different. In both movies, the music is unique and clever, creating the perfect mood of the scene, although the moods are the difference. A&E was wise in pairing a particular theme to most characters, and creating a vibrant title piece that mimics a hunting chase. Focus Features managed to create a much more romantic piano melody that truly intensifies the emotions of this film. The music successfully allows one to be whimsical and flirtacious, while the other is more romantic and sensual.

Both versions do provide a great depiction of the story, and the scenery. The land that spans the areas of England where the story takes place are quite beautifully spanned in both films. Especially in the scenes of Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s estate, in both films, the exquisite property is land that anyone would be apt to purchase if they had the means.

With Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, the development and shifting of their relationship is much more apparent, although I was more satisfied with the affectionate tenderness of Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden. Especially in terms of the conversation that creates their engagement, the new misty scene captivates and delivers much more intimate satisfaction at their finally coming together, then the more tedious and unfeeling older version, despite it being more accurately dictated from the book. The chance encounter Lizzy has with Mr. Darcy at his estate, however, is far more enjoyable in the A&E version, showing much more of the change in Darcy’s countenance, and Lizzy attentions to him, the 2005 film was somewhat rushed in this part and disappointing.

I was very engaged in the ball at Mr. Bingley’s estate that was brilliantly directed by Joe Wright in 2005′s film. It is by far my favorite scene in the film that shows the great elegance of Bingley and Darcy, versus the frivolity of most the Bennetts. The unique dance scene with Elizabeth and Darcy stands legendary, as does the continuous feelings of constant, uncut camera movement through all the events of the evening.

Both films are apparently successful. 2005′s theater release was praised with four Oscar nominations. It was rated on IMDb with 7.8 out of 10 stars. It grasped much attention from a variety of award patrons. 1995 posed a very substantial Emmy winning version that outstars the newer with 9.3 out of 10 on the same website. A&E’s success is rooted in the lasting essence this piece has on every generation since it’s production. We will have to wait to see if Joe Wright’s film also withstands the test of time with such majesty.

I would gladly watch either, though I am pleased that a more condensed version has been created to satisfy me even in my most hectic of schedules. Although, it must be told that only Jane Austen herself is the true author of romance for this story in her novel. Only by reading her story, can we then imagine Darcy and Elizabeth to be exactly who we want them to be.
