Everyone, in one way or another, has surely come across with America’s 11th most famous breed, the Miniature Schnauzer. This small breed of dog is famous for its bushy beard, mustache and eyebrows and rugged yet elegant look. Although little, you can not expect this dog to be delicate and toy-ish for it is sturdy, heavy, muscular and brave.
The Miniature Schnauzer is the small version of the standard Schnauzer and is the result of mix-breeding of the standard Schnauzer and Poodle or Affenpinscher. This dog originated from Germany during the late 19th century. Its first recorded existence was in 1888.
This breed was developed for the intention of having a small Schnauzer that will hunt and catch rats and vermin that live inside the farmers’ barns. Also, it was used as a house guard and stock herder and watcher. Presently, the Miniature Schnauzer is widely known as a family pet rather than a working or farm dog.
In the United States, the Mini Schnauzer was first introduced in 1924. Two years later, it was accepted as a new breed by the American Kennel Club. In the UK, it was first registered in 1948.
The standard temperament for this breed is said to be alert, active and docile. It should also be sociable, intelligent and eager to please. Although brave and a natural watchdog, this breed should not be overaggressive yet never too shy.
The Mini Schnauzer is an excellent watchdog because it does not warn physically but rather vocally in terms of barking profusely. It does not stop warning the household but once the stranger is greeted by the family as a friend, the Mini Schnauzer would stop being wary and becomes friendly with the new face, too. Moreover, the Mini Schnauzer is very easy to train and abides submissively therefore it is never a problem inside or outside the house.
The Mini Schnauzer is very energetic and gets bored easily therefore it should be allowed lots of playtime in order for it to release its excess energy. When it gets bored, it will find other sources of fun which might cause problems. Around children, this breed understands that it has to be gentle and careful therefore, they play with them with fair amount of intensity.
Outwardly, this breed possesses a double coat wherein, the outer coat is coarse and the inner is smooth. The usual colors of this breed are black and white, salt and pepper, black and silver, black, white and parti-colors. It also sheds very minimally and so it is safe for people with allergic reactions.
Holding the distinction of being the only spotted breed, the Dalmatian is a medium-sized dog possessing a big reputation! Many people know this breed because of its Disney fame, admiring its symmetrical body, superior endurance, and lean, clean lines. Its short, dense coat is pure white with black or brown spots randomly scattered all over it.
The Dalmatian is alert, active, agile and extremely intelligent. Because of their heritage as a working and sporting breed, they are superb performance animals, but also outstanding family pets. They are devoted to their owners, moderately territorial but not overly aggressive, and pleasant to live with.
The daily maintenance and upkeep of this breed requires little effort. They are not suited to being left alone in a yard chained or alone for long periods of time and should be cared for in household environment. Being people-lovers, they love being the center of their owners attention and affection.
Although the exact origins are uncertain, the Dalmatian is associated with Dalmatia, a Croatian region”and spotted dogs have popped up throughout history in Asia, Europe, and Africa, credited with a dozen nationalities and as many names. The Dalmatian has done almost everything”he has been a dog of war, a draft dog, ratter, firehouse mascot, shepherd, bird dog, trail hound and retriever! Most importantly, he is the one and only coach dog, his kinship with horses a natural instinct as his urge to follow and guard the horse-drawn vehicle remains.
The Dalmatians expression is alert and intelligent, indicating a stable, outgoing temperament and belying his fun-loving, people-oriented nature. They are a high-energy breed, capable of great endurance and speed, and they should have exercise every day. The Dalmatian is very trainable, to a high degree of obedience, and will do well with a firm owner and consistent training patterns.
Young Dalmatians are quite energetic, so they require strong leadership and exercise. If they are shown who is boss, they will calm down after a few years. People who stay on and keep them after their active years will be very pleased that they did.
If you are considering getting a Dalmatian, its important that you are committed to giving them the time, energy and authority needed to handle them! If not, they may become destructive, hard to control, and restless. If you lead an active and healthy life though, and know how to take the lead, then the Dalmatian would make you a great companion!
Keeping your aquarium clean should be a relatively simple job once you establish a routine. Not only does it clean your water and the tank itself, but it also keeps your fish happy and healthy. Generally, youll need to clean your tank and the water once a month. Once you get into your aquarium maintenance routine, youll find it only takes a short amount of time to get it done.
Before starting on your cleaning, always unplug any electrical attachments or accessories on your tank, such as the filter, lights, or heaters you may have. Dont use any soap or detergent to clean your tank. These chemicals are harmful to fish and could easily make them very ill or even result in death. If those chemicals can make tank fish ill, then think about what flushing them down your sink each day does to the natural environment of fish in the wild.
Your next step in the maintenance routine is to choose whether you want to scrape or vacuum. Both tasks need to be done and most aquarium stores try to tell you that you should vacuum first. However if you do this, youll drop the water level in your tank, which means that scraping with such low water levels will increase the algae density in the small amount of remaining water. This has the potential to cause health problems in your fish.
Vacuuming Your Tank ” Aquariums call tank vacuums Pythons and theyre nothing more than a rubber hose with a tube attached at the end. The idea is to drain a little water from your tank at the same time as sucking up any dirt, debris, food waste or other bits that can pollute your aquarium. As you vacuum, run the tube around decorations and filters and down into the gravel or stones to get the bits that hide there.
Dont vacuum for too long as you risk reducing the water levels too far. You shouldnt remove any more than about one-fifth of the total water volume, so this means vacuum quickly.
Scraping Your Tank ” Scraping the sides of your aquarium to remove algae or debris is an easy job and should be done using a sponge attached to a handle. These can be bought from the aquarium store and are designed especially for this purpose. The sponge is designed to easily remove any algae from decorations or glass or your filter. Always check that the type of sponge you use wont be too abrasive or it can scratch or eve damage acrylic surfaces.
Once your scraping and vacuuming are complete, begin refilling your aquarium. You should always use de-chlorinated water and if you can, try to get the water temperature as close to your tanks temperature as possible. This can sometimes mean leaving your new tank water at room temperature for a while before pouring it in slowly. When your water level is correct, re-attach your electrical accessories, and test your water with your aquarium test kit. Always check the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels for your fishs optimum health. If your aquarium is a salt-water tank, then test the salinity levels carefully.
Hey you, yes, you! Do you know the signs to look for when it comes to animal abuse?! Do you do your part when it comes to protecting our furry four-legged friends? Unfortunately, animal abuse still exists in our world today but with education and team work, maybe, just maybe, we can make it a thing of the past.
There are many humane education programs available that teach people the importance of recognizing animal abuse and how to stop it. In 2008, the ASPCA partnered with a program called Do Something! Do Something is an on-line community aimed at teenagers. It is a place for teens to gather (via the internet) so that they may discuss ways to make the world a better place. Animal welfare is one of the “hot topics” that is discussed on a daily basis. It is one of the top concerns of teens today (thank goodness!).
Do Something’s teen-friendly web content covering animal welfare is quite popular and a tremendous success at offering “humane education.” Since inception, ten $500 grants have been awarded by the ASPCA to teens who have stepped up and implemented their own animal welfare projects. It’s tremendously encouraging to me to see our children taking such an active role in important issues today.
So, at this point, you may be asking, “What exactly is HUMANE EDUCATION?” Well, according the ASPCA, humane education teaches us how to care for the animals in our home and communities. It fosters kindness, respect and empathy for all beings, and it teaches responsible stewardship of the environment and its diverse inhabitants. Humane education has one simple goal: to make the world a more humane and kind place!
Changing the world requires help and contribution from people just like you. If making a difference and improving the world we’ll hand down to our children appeals to you, you may be wondering how you can get started. It starts with little things that can ultimately make you a contributing member of the community looking out for animal welfare.
Knowing who to call if you witness or suspect animal abuse is perhaps the most fundamental step in making a difference. Take the time to find your local Humane Society number and keep it handy. More useful in a general sense is your local police non-emergency number.
Once you know who to call, know what circumstances warrant calling. Obviously, witnessing a dog being beaten represents a justifiable situation for calling, but dogs left chained outside without adequate food or water, for excessive durations or for hours during cold winter months also warrant a call for help. All you need do is youre your eyes open for issues of clear neglect or abuse.
Take the time to educate your children. Do your part to instill compassion and respect for animals and set a good example.3 Ensure that your children know that animals suffer much like humans, experiencing pain, sadness. Perhaps more than any other action you can take, teaching your children to respect and care for animals paves the road for a better future.
Get involved but don’t get involved. That one requires a little explaining. What I mean is that you should leave action to the professionals and those with the authority to act. Do not intervene directly by confronting an abuser yourself. Doing so exposes you and your family to the risk of retaliation. Call your police non-emergency number or your local humane society. They are best equipped to get the job done and will almost always accept anonymous reports.
Help define new and stronger laws by joining the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade. Catching bad guys in the act only does so much. The penalties for their crimes are where the real changes need to happen. By contributing to anti-cruelty petitions and writing to your local legislators demanding tougher laws, you can help make a real difference in deterring people from engaging in animal cruelty.
Making a real difference costs you nothing but a little bit of your time and there’s much you can do. It starts with awareness and education. Join together and make a difference in the lives of the animals who ask so little of us but give back so much in terms of love, loyalty and friendship. You CAN make a difference.
Recognized the world over for its unique wrinkled coat and blue-black tongue, lets get to know the dog called the Shar Pei. Its also referred to by its other names, such as the sharkskin dog, the Chinese Shar Pei or Chinese Fighting Dog, because it was in China that it originated. The name Shar Pei can be roughly translated to sand paper skin, which takes into account its rough, prickly hide.
The Shar Pei are no doubt an ancient breed, because we can trace their ancestors to as far back as 2,000 years ago! The bluish tongue is unique to only one other breed, the chow-chow, and they are thought to be related. Because of the way it looks and its close link to the chow-chow, the Shar Pei has ties with the giant Mastiff breeds!
Of medium size and substance and squarish in profile, the Shar Pei has what is called a hippopotamus head and an endearing, melancholy expression. For many years, the Shar Pei was used as a general-purpose farm dog in the Chinese countryside, for such purposes as hunting, protecting cattle (stock), and as a guard dog for the family and home. During that period, it was bred for its intelligence, strength, and scowling face!
The loose skin and harsh coat were specifically bred into the Shar Pei in order to aid it in fighting, so that its opponent would find it next to impossible to grab and hold on to it. Possessing no undercoat, their coats do not need to be trimmed, but regular brushing would be perfect. The adults do not have as many wrinkly skin folds as the puppies, for this breed loses its wrinkles as it gets older.
They have three coat varieties: the horse-coat, the brush-coat, and the rare bear-coat. The horse-coat is prickly to the touch and is rough like sand, but the brush coat has longer hair and is softer to the touch. Their coats come in all solid colors and in sables too.
The loyal Shar Pei connects well with his family and is outstandingly devoted to his master. They are fearless, bright, playful, dominant and full of character. They are recognized by their melancholy expression, but they are surprisingly calm, self-reliant, loyal and friendly dogs.
Because they are so smart, Shar Pei should have a firm but loving and consistent figure of authority, because a weak handler will end up being bossed around by this self-assured little fellow. Because they were initially bred to be fighters, they have an understandable tendency to be bull-headed, but this is easily fixed by early training, socialization and exercise. The Shar Pei have been many things in the past, including catching vermin, herding and tracking, and as long as you know the right way to treat and handle them, they can also be a wonderful companion for you and your family.
Be precautious of your cat’s health during hot weather in order to keep it from becoming dehydrated. Cats can’t communicate as well as dogs. That is why it is important for you to observe your cat and watch for any behavior related to heat discomfort or dehydration. Try your best to help keep your cat cool during warm seasons.
Bring your cat indoors when you notice the temperature is rising. Stray cats learn where to keep cool, but your cat is a pet and may not have the instincts to find a cool place to rest. If it does find a cool place, you may not even know where your cat is all day because it will stay there until the sun sets.
If your cat travels in your car with you, never leave your cat in a parked car in the heat. The temperature in a closed car rises extremely rapidly in the heat. It can be harmful or even deadly to your cat.
Even when you try to park in the shade to prevent your car from heating up, as the sun moves throughout the day. The heat travels from hot areas to cold areas. Dogs can sometimes alert passers-by that they are in discomfort, but a cat is unable to do that and may die in as little as fifteen minutes. Always get your cat out of the car with you when you park.
Keeping your cat’s fur short will help it keep cool. It will also help to comb out the fur to remove shed fur that is trapped beneath the top layer. Cat owners who have cats with natural long hair may have no choice but to provide their cat with a cooler environment.
Make sure your cat has access to clean water. Regardless of the season, it is important to allow your cat to stay well hydrated. Keep water cool by changing it a few times each day during hot weather. The goal is to keep your cat’s body temperature constant.
Feeding a horse may appear easy, but you would be amazed if you knew about the ignorance level of various horse owners. It is a fact that there is no golden rule relevant involving the nutritional needs of a horse, as it mostly depends on the age, body weight and the level of activity, which the horse goes through. Grass is the most fundamental part of a horse diet. It is one of the MAJOR necessities for a properly functioning digestive system so when we speak of forage, we normally mean natural pasture and cut hay.
The quantum of food a big horse requires is close to 2 to two point five% of their body weight, so when a horse weighs a thousand pound, it would require 20 to 25 pounds of feed per day. Horses require feed, which is high in nutrition value and not high-fiber, food which tampers with its digestive system. In a perfect world, your horse should consume a minimum of 1 percent of his body size in hay/grass grass daily.
In fact, a horse would be happy if you fed him with a feed of hay/pasture forage amounting to one percent of his body weight. In case your horse is not employed in much activity, then the right feed is only forge without any grains. However, horses which are at the growing or breeding stage or they are very active would require to have supplements to their grass diet, like grains or concentrated supplement. Think about it this way, grasses should offer at least one half or more of the total weight of the feed eaten everyday for best growth and development.
The nutrient content and the quality of the forage are crucial considerations when you are planning to give your horse a stable diet. When you are aware of this, you can easily figure out the correct amounts of nutrients that would meet his specific needs. One of the best and most affordable sources of summer feed is pasture, which if it is good quality, can satisfy all the nutrition requisites of the horse. To know the correct quantity of pasture that your horse needs, use this rough guideline, which uses the weight of 1000 to 1200 pounds. Roughly the necessities are as follows: a mare and foal would need 1.75 to 2 acres; yearlings would need 1.5 to 2 acres and weanlings 0.5 to 1 acre.
During winter the food could be cut hay, but mind the quality. The hay which you food should be cut uniformly and have green leaf-like appearance and there should not be any dust, moulds, weeds or stubble accompanying the hay.
There is plenty of proteins, vitamins and minerals contained in this food. Yes, you can use alfalfa hay, but be mindful about the higher protein content if you are feeding to young developing horses, as it may contain an excessive amount of calcium in relationship to phosphorus. Too much calcium is not good for growing horses so if you’re not sure about hay quality, have it analyzed.
Hamster toys provide a ton of different benefits for your pet. You can buy a variety of different toys that allow hamsters the opportunity to play and exercise at the same time. The most common types of toys for hamsters are of the running variety. There are also lots of toys available that encourage hamsters to climb and dig.
What if buying hamster toys isn’t an option though? Maybe you don’t have enough money or just can’t be bothered to make your way to the pet store. Have no fear. There are quite a few really neat hamster toys that you can put together yourself. Here are few basic ideas.
One incredibly simple thing you can use to entertain your hamster is a cardboard roll. The type of roll you want to use basically depends on the size of your pet. If you have a small hamster, a toilet paper roll will probably suffice. If your pet is a bit of fatty, on the other hand, consider using one of those 12′ rolls from a paper towel tube. So what will your hamster do with these rolls? Well it’s really up to him! Chances are he’ll burrow into them though. Hamsters love to dig and hide.
Another great hamster toy that can be made for cheap is a simple box. All you need to do is take an empty Kleenex box and put it in your pet’s cage. Make sure you remove any plastic from the box before doing so. This way your hamster won’t eat anything that he’s not supposed to. Rodent’s love to hide and the Kleenex box allows him to do this. For real creative individuals, you can even take this toy a step further by connecting a few boxes with cardboard tubes. Make your little buddy a hamster castle!
The third hamster toy that I want to talk about is a little bit more difficult to make. It’s basically a hamster maze created out of cardboard. In order to make this maze you need an empty flat of soda and some scrap cardboard. Take the empty flat and cut your hamster an entrance and an exit to the maze. Now cut the cardboard scraps into long strips that will eventually become the walls of the maze. Simply glue the strips into the flat, arranging the maze as you see fit. Place your little pet near the entrance to the maze and watch him go!
The number of hamster toys that you can make at home is limitless. Use stuff that you see around the house and be creative. You’ll save a bit of money and provide your hamster with a ton of fun and exercise.
An invisible dog fence is a special wire concealed on your property that makes sure the dog doesn’t go outside the safety of its shelter. Moreover, it will ensure that dogs can`t bring any accidental harm to nearby property. Invisible dog fences are quite simple. The wire carries a signal broadcasted from a tiny unit. The dog wears a collar which receives an electrical shock if it gets near the wire or crosses the fence. More specifically, these electrical signals are by and large zoned.
When the dog runs near a warning zone anywhere around the wire, it will hear a warning beep from its collar. If it gets even closer, it will endure a buzz from a small electrical impulse via the collar.
These fences are problem free and can be adjusted to suit any dog and any layout denoted by the owner along with the distances of both the warning and the correction zones. The force of the electrical impulse can also be changed to satisfy the size and character of the dog.
This device can keep dogs within the owner’s property and help them know their boundaries. Upon taking some shocks, the dog is mechanically trained by the system to stay away from the boundaries of the property.
Additionally, electronic dog fences are convenient since they don`t take up a huge space. They are controlled by the collar the dog is wearing and the consigned areas the dog is allowed to stay in.
What is significant about underground fences is the fact that they can be wired and programmed to secure almost any vulnerable region of your home that is prone to the playful mischief of your lively dog such as gardens, swimming pools, driveways, fish ponds, flowerbeds and other sensitive areas.
The only problem with invisible fences is that they can’t prevent other people or animals from trespassing on your property.
Dogs should be safely contained at all times so that they can’t be disturbed or harmed by other animals or by children. Invisible or electronic fences are one of the best solutions to this problem.
Are you losing your pets to accidents? Do they wander and never return? Show them that you care. Keep your pets safe from harm with the wireless dog fence.
When ever your dog got severe injury it not just need emergency your dog also need Pain Killers For Dogs to ease your dog pain. We all love our dog and when it gets severely injured we become mentally upset. For many of us our dog is one of the member of the family and when it get injured by accident or by any other dog then we will be a state of shock. Nevertheless, we need to pull ourselves together and make sure they get the best care possible.
When your dog is under anesthetic, you don’t have to worry about your dog’s pain. When the anesthetic is over, you need to be your dog’s advocate to make sure he or she relived from pain. Your vet doctor may be great at emergency care and surgery, but not good enough at pain management. Pain thresholds in dogs can vary greatly, just as with people. Since dogs may not always vocalize their pain, it can be hard for even the best vet doctor to get the pain medication at the right dose. You need to be sure that the right dose of pain killers for dogs is being given.
While your dog is receiving emergency care at the vet’s facility, you have the right and responsibility to ask questions. Find out how your dog’s pain is being assessed and treated. Ask how much pain medication is being given and how often. Ask how that dose compares to the maximum dosage allowed for a dog that is the weight of your dog. If you have to leave, call regularly to find out about how your dog is doing. The vet’s staff may not like all the calls or questions, but that’s not your problem. Be polite of course, but be persistent. Your main concern is the well being of your dog not whether the vet’s staff likes you.
If your vet advises that your dog stay at the vet’s facility for the night, you need to ask more questions. Find out if the vet has a staff person who stays with the Pet overnight. If so, ask if that person is qualified to assess your dog’s pain and change the pain medicine dose, if necessary. After emergency treatment, someone should be keeping watch over your dog all night in case there is a setback or a need for more pain medication. If there is no overnight staff to take care your dog, consider taking your dog with you for the night. The vet may not like that idea and try to talk you out of it. However, your dog is better off with you than alone without someone who can give attention to his or her pain.
When your dog is get injured severely then you are the best advocate for your dog. Many have a tendency to be passive with vetnerian in a crisis. You should be assertive because our dogs can’t tell us about their pain levels. After emergency treatment, we need to make sure that their pain is also taken care and that the dogs get the right dose of pain killers for dogs.
