Your Guide to Training to Keep Bees

Posted By Calvin Wapasa on April 9, 2009 @ 4:57 am
by Calvin Wapasa

Beekeeping was once considered a simple hobby, but is now a billion-dollar food market industry that requires time consuming skill. Now that honey is a considerable part of the world’s diet, it is obvious to see that beekeeping has evolved far beyond the hobby stage.

Any beekeeper is going to have to learn bee biology from an experienced beekeeper. Producing honey is a simple matter of regurgitating food for bees, which is a mechanism through which they attempt to survive the long winter without their main food source, flowers.

It’s amazing that bees have mastered the art of survival during the winter months. Bees normally produce honey during the warmer months only, and many beekeepers farm during the cold off season. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a cheap hobby, because far from being cheap, this hobby can cost you a lot of money through training, especially when it comes to knowing where to set up your bee boxes.

Keepers must educate themselves in entomology (the study of insects), so they can know which other insects are compatible with bees and which ones join yellow jackets, mites, hornets, and wasps as killers of bees.

A good beekeeper will have a lot of science background, since this is how they are most able to prevent pests from taking over the hive and providing a good habitat for their bees. Beekeeping stretches back generations in some families, and that generally makes people dedicated and serious about the activity, which is important in any type of beekeeper training.

Many people learn through the ranks of great grandparents, grandparents, and parents and it’s just a family tradition and way of life that’s taught to children. Honey production is now a very profitable part of many farms, joining produce, meat, and dairy as a profitable market item.

What To Feed Dogs For A Healthier Life

Posted By Jane Rinter on @ 4:48 am
by Jane Rinter

Dogs can bring immense joy to people. They can help to alleviate stress at the end of a busy working day, or even add structure to a person’s life. It should thus be a dog owner’s obligation to bring a bright look of health to their canine friend’s eyes, help create a shiny coat of fur, perk up its energy levels, and ensure longevity of life of a loyal companion, all through proper nutrition.

For the dogs sake, one must strive to be in the know on what to feed it for a healthier life. Most commercialized pet foods contain bulk fillers and by-products which are used because they are more affordable than all natural or organic dog food. However, they might put your dog at risk to possible ailments or leave them open to allergies. There is no need to jeopardize one’s best buddys health by opting for such commercial dog food.

There are quite a number of dog owners who thus prefer to play it safe and prepare home made meals for their pets. They use natural ingredients and come close to feeding organic meals to the dogs. Some of them do spice things up a bit at time with the use of other exotic ingredients which may or may not go down well with canines.

Most dogs have great owners who make sure they receive proper nutrition and healthy all natural foods. Some are careful in what they feed their furry companions, aware that one man’s meat could be a dog’s poison. These owners will observe caution and procedure in introducing such foods to their pets to avoid possible allergic reaction or even illness.

Not all dog owners are able to find enough time to prepare healthy meals for their pets every time though. This leads to many of them buying commercial dog food which might not necessarily provide the canines with what they need. Many of them might not even actually be safe for consumption.

One alternative is to go organic or all-natural. By doing so, dog owners have a greater chance of improving their pets’ health and vitality. Some all-natural pet food stores provide good options depending on the dogs age and health condition. There are premium quality dog food now suited for all life stages, including formulas for senior dogs and even overweight canines.

Organic dog food can help breed dogs that are stronger and healthier, thus reducing the risk of diseases and troublesome allergies. These all result from improved immune systems which organic foods are well known for. Signs that a dog is benefiting from the consumption of such foods include a brighter lift in its step, more energy and always being bright and alert.

If a dog owner finds him or herself with little time to prepare the pet’s meal, it would be wise to opt for an all natural or organic alternative. It would be ideal to use quality organic dog food that provides the recommended daily allowance of minerals and vitamins, while containing reduced calories. One could also try grain-free formulations that are able to protect dogs from possible allergies.

Treating and Preventing Cancer in Cats

Posted By Robert Hart on @ 3:21 am
by Robert Hart

This may come as a shock but 50% of all cats over the age of 10 have some form of cancer.

Although veterinary research has led to advances that can extend the life of cats with cancer, it fails to focus on the cause. Radiation and chemotherapy are expensive and quite toxic to a pet whose immune system is already weak. Non-toxic, alternative therapies offer great hope. When administered along with radiation and chemo they can offset the toxic effects of cancer treatment. Some holistic vets are having success using them as an alternative to conventional treatment.

The ability of your cat to survive cancer depends on how quickly it is diagnosed, the type of cancer, and your commitment to ferret out the potential causes in your home. Different types of cancer will require slightly different treatments, but in all cases, the underlying cause of cancer is a weakened immune system.

The Cornerstone of Health- The Immune System

Your cat’s body is replacing old worn out cells ever day. As the old cells die, they are removed to the colon as waste, and replaced with new cells that are identical! When your cats’ immune system is healthy, the amount of replacement cells is equal to the amount of cells that die off: Any abnormal cells are quickly identified and removed before they can replicate.

When the immune system does not perform its function correctly, two things happen:

1. The old cells do not die off when they should,

2. The immune system fails to recognize abnormal cells so they begin to replicate. The abnormal cells begin to bind together, form cancerous masses.

Primary Causes of Cat Cancer

Cancer does not develop in healthy cats: It is the result of exposure to some toxic elements over time. Finding the potential causes in your home means examining the water, air quality, and bedding for toxic chemicals. Recent research has shown a connection between the two cornerstones of pet ownership, vaccinations and packaged pet foods.

The best approach to prevent cancer in healthy pets, is to give them immune building supplements. A strong immune system is essential to fight back against cancer cells in sick cats.

How to Stop Puppies Biting

Posted By Craig Clemins on April 2, 2009 @ 4:46 am
by Craig Clemins

One of the most common ways that puppies explore their world from a young age is through nipping. They begin to learn about different flavors, textures, and tastes and to find out the things they like and those they don’t. Nipping hard and biting are not acceptable however and your puppy needs to know this.

Make sure your dog know you are the boss – the Alpha Dog

The first thing you need to know is that you must be respected by your puppy. That means being the Alpha Dog. Below are a few things you can do to get and maintain Alpha Dog status.

Always walk through doorways first.

Always eat before your dog.

Address disobedience the moment it happens.

Don’t walk around your dog.

Never allow your dog to sleep with you on your bed.

Never participate in rough play with your dog as this encourages nipping.

Play fighting and engaging in competitive games such as tug of war with your puppy can encourage nipping. These games teach your dog that it’s acceptable and fun to play rough with humans. If you sometimes allow play fighting and rough behavior and other times don’t allow it your dog will only grow more confused. Don’t allow rough behavior, especially in puppies.

Ignore your puppy after you’ve been bitten.

When you get nipped by your puppy, make a high pitched noise to demonstrate pain. Immediately after stop playing with your dog and give it absolutely no attention for a full 15 minutes. This teaches your puppy that nipping ends the fun.

Make snatching unacceptable.

When your puppy snatches food from your hand, don’t tolerate it. Immediately turn your back on your puppy and don’t give him the food for a full five minutes. After 5 minutes has passed, turn back to your dog and attempt to give him the food again. First make your dog sit and then slowly gift him the food. If he snatches again you’ll need to repeat the process. Eventually your dog will understand that snatching is not ok.

Stick to a Consistent Routine

Consistency is a real key to quickly training your dogs when they are nipping and biting too much. Stay consistent in the way you teach and what you allow. Also set a side some time each day to train your dog.

Koi Garden Ponds Make Your Property Attractive

Posted By Barbara Olson on February 28, 2009 @ 3:25 am
by Mike Mcray

Building Koi garden ponds takes a lot of time, effort, and special consideration. First of all, you need to understand a bit about the Koi fish, which is a Japanese fish shaped rather like a drum. They are notoriously vibrant and playful, which makes them an ideal backyard “pet.” Having this type of pond requires full time attention. However, given the fact that simply watching Koi can relieve stress, it is well worth the effort.

When building a Koi pond, you have to consider the time involved. Therefore, before beginning this endeavor, make sure that you have the time and the resources necessary. Koi require a lot of care and their pond will require more. The results are worth it but you have to get to that point first.

A Koi pond has to be specially constructed. The first thing you need to think about is its location. For example, Koi fish do not do well in sunlight, so the pond should not be located directly in the sun. Placing it beneath the trees is ideal, but only if they are not trees which frequently shed. Leaves can increase the water’s pH level to dangerous proportions. Thus, you might consider placing your pond within some walls.

You also need to carefully plan the size of your Koi garden. These fish can grow quite large; they can measure three feet in length and forty pounds in weight. As such, the pond has to be big. It needs to give them room to grow. Of course, frequently, Koi fish will grow as large as they are allowed. As well, they like to be in groups; they are not solitary fish. Anticipate beginning with at least three or four of them.

Insofar as pond maintenance is concerned, you can make your job easier by building the pond with a pond liner or a pre-made pond. Pond liners are generally recommended because then you can increase its size without any real problems.

You should also think about including aquatic plants, gravel, and pebbles when building a Koi pond. The plants provide lots of nutrients and they also protect the fish from the sun. The pebbles provide the perfect place for healthy and beneficial bacteria to breed.

The water in a Koi pond is important as well. Koi are very sensitive, so the water’s pH level should be neutral. Filtration and aeration systems are highly recommended. Look for ones with both biological filters and UV filters. A drain in the bottom of the pond is a good idea as well.

What to Look for in Aggressive Dog Behavior Training Programs

Posted By Anthony Galz on January 1, 2009 @ 2:15 pm
by Aleesha London

If your dog is behaving badly, your dog may need aggressive dog behavior training classes. Every dog owner must know if and when their dogs need behavior training classes. This is especially if your dog is already a threat to other animals and to humans. There are however, numerous modules and training programs vying for your attention. How do you know which programs you should trust?

Real Expertise

You have the option of choosing an instruction manual or a real trainer. In any case, the person behind a training program for dogs should be a real expert. He should have enough experience under his belt to make him a credible trainer or source of information about dog training. You don’t want to trust your dog to someone who has a fake trainer’s certification. You can try to find out how good an expert really is by asking about his credentials. You can also ask fellow dog owners if they know anything about the trainer you are considering.

Owner Involvement

Keep in mind that you are the one living with your dog, not your trainer. It is therefore quite crucial that a training program or module that you are considering has provisions for owner participation. This means a dog expert should also be willing to help you understand the reasons behind your dog’s behavior and the rationale behind the techniques you will be using to control your dog. After all, you don’t want to be a mindless automaton with no idea why you need to do or say certain things to make your dog obey.

Affordability

Although aggressive dog behavior training class may be necessary for your dog, there’s no need for you to go bankrupt just to pay for it. Whenever possible you would want to pay for an expertly made training program that will not cost you a fortune. Unfortunately, many training classes do cost a lot. You would have to be more patient and resourceful if you want to find one that will fit your budget perfectly. Consider looking through newspaper ads, yellow pages and online directories.

Effectiveness

Keep in mind that dog trainers and experts don’t always agree. One expert might tell you one thing while another might tell you otherwise. Which one should you consider following? The most effective technique always has an edge. The question is: how do you know which techniques are effective? This is where you might have to do a little more research. There are bound to be some dog owners out there who will swear by a good program or module for dog training. Search in online forums and review sites for owner recommendations.

Humane Techniques

As the dog owner of course, you don’t need to be a dog expert to know when a technique isn’t good. Before you consider a training program or module, try to find out first the general guiding principle behind it. Believe it or not, some experts still incorporate physical harm in their training modules. You should know though that the use of too much hitting and electric shock might make your dog even more aggressive or emotionally scarred. Always opt for humane modules.

Aggressive dog behavior training has been known to help tame millions of aggressive dogs. With the right training program or module, you will be able to finally have the loving dog of your dreams.

How to Protect Your Pets from Fleas

Posted By Brent Sweet on December 27, 2008 @ 1:50 pm
by Donny Yu

For homes infested with fleas, flea bites can be painful annoyances that also carry the risk of disease. The flea, a small insect that preys on humans, cats, dogs and other mammals, feed from blood by tearing into the skin. These bites cause small, round marks on the skin that may bleed freely. Due to the tears in the skin, the bites itch, which encourage scratching and further damage to the skin. This can cause a chain reaction, resulting in the flea bites lingering for up to several weeks. For those who are allergic to flea bites, the small round, red marks turn into rashes, which can swell and itch even more than a standard bite.

There are several things that you can do to combat flea bites. First, make certain you dainty any pets you own with flea control medicines, such as Advantage, Advantix, and Frontline and Frontline PLUS. These medications, when applied properly to a pet, allow the pet to become walking flea killers, as the fleas die upon exposure to animal treated with one of these medications.

As fleas require humidity to hatch from their larva state, purchasing and using a dehumidifier can assist in controlling flea bites. As you severely cut down the amount of fleas that live in the area by crippling their breeding abilities, you will cut down on the number of bites suffered.

Vacuuming is another good way to help control flea populations. However, if you do use vacuuming to help control fleas, you need to make certain that you discard the bag immediately, as the larvae will hatch inside the bag, then escape into your home.

Flea bites can have dire consequences outside of the pain associated with just the bite. As fleas tend to prey upon many hosts, they can draw the diseases from the blood of other victims and pass it onto you. The most notable example of this occurring was in the medieval ages and the black plague. Fleas would prey upon rats which had the bubonic plague, and the the fleas would bite a human. The place where the flea bit and transmitted the disease would bear a mark looking like a ring around the bite. While the bubonic plague is no longer a significant threat to modern nations, illnesses like West Nile can be transmitted through flea and mosquito bites.

If you suffer from flea bites, you should take action immediately by treating your pets and working to eliminate the pests from your home.

How to Stop Your Dog’s Excessive Barking

Posted By Jake Thomas on December 25, 2008 @ 1:45 pm
by Jake Thomas

Barking is as natural to a dog as talking is as natural to a human being. Trying to stop dog barking altogether would be like trying to prevent someone to talk forever! It’s impossible and it’s not exactly a nice thing to do. The thing is, excessive barking (much like excessive talking) is a major annoyance-not just to you but to your family, your neighbors, the children at play, the mailman, and every one else in earshot.

Though barking is not to be stopped-after all, it’s handy when your dog uses it for proper reasons like warning you, warding off trespassers, or telling you something of significance-it must be controlled. If you want to keep peace in the neighborhood and between your neighbors, controlling your dog’s barking habits is important.

A lot of people-even dog owners-aren’t too conscious that there are many ways to try and stop your dog from barking at whim.

These days, busy dog owners tend to run to these things called anti-barking collars. They’re convenient as they don’t seem to require much time from the owner. The great thing about collars is that they can manage a dog’s barking habits even when the owner is not around. As of late, there are normally three different types of anti-barking collars available in the market.

One is the sonar collar. This sonar collar is a discreet little thing. Whenever the dog barks, it releases a sound with a certain frequency inaudible to humans but irritable to dogs. This in turn will get them to think that the irritable sound is a punishment to their barking and will (hopefully) get them to stop.

The second one is the citronella collar. The citronella collar sprays a scent that dogs don’t really like. Whenever they bark, the collar would spray this scent so that, similar to the sonar collar, the dog would find the scent as a castigation for their incessant barking. Though this seems pretty useful, a lot of people say that their dogs have already found a way to get around this anti-barking device.

One anecdotal report states that their dog would just keep on barking until the collar runs out of citronella. Afterwards, he will go on barking the whole day without having to deal with the citronella smell. Other dogs find other ways, like making a face (that probably gets them to hold their breath somehow) when the collar sprays and then barking again.

In general, citronella collars should be used as a last resort (i.e. driving you and your neighbors to madness) because the scent is extremely offensive to dogs (although not physically harmful). It also doesn’t address the actual cause of barking. If there is a physical or psychological cause behind his barking, then it’s counterproductive to suppress his ability to tell you that something is wrong.

The third one is the shock collar. Now, this collar is the most notorious of the three. Whenever the dog barks, it shocks the dog with electricity. The strength level of the electric current can even be changed from 1 to 6; 6 being the highest and the one that stings the most.

Many people regard this collar as brutal and condone it. Come to think of it, no decent person would want to do that to their own child (or anyone they want to discipline for that matter) so doing it to their own pet sounds insane, illogical and altogether cruel as well. As much as possible, this kind of sonar is avoided-and for good reason.

Although they may all seem very practical, easy, and promising, collars are at most, simply a supplementary solution to incessant dog barking.

The best thing to do is to find out first why exactly your dog has that kind of habit. If humans have psychologists, dogs have veterinarian behaviorists-their role is to generally observe a dog’s environment and circumstances to figure out what exactly triggers their socially unacceptable behavior and then find solutions to eliminate the behavior with proper training methods based on their findings.

Some reasons as to why a dog would bark are things like lack of things to do (meaning they have so much energy with nothing to use it with) or frustration (perhaps they’re being bullied by another dog in the family or by the people around them) to name two.

If you can’t pinpoint what exactly triggers their unwanted behavior, call a vet behaviorist near you to help you find out what’s bothering your dog. A vet behaviorist will also instruct you what to do.

In extreme cases, they might suggest an anti-barking collar but that should be used side by side with proper training techniques. Like, say, if you find out that your dog is just plain bored and has no other way to release pent-up energy, then work on giving your dog something to do.

Provide them with physical activity like walks, catch, and play time with other dogs. If you’re always out, put them in the care of someone else while you’re out-like a relative or a friend or a dog walker or a doggie daycare. Especially when you’re alone in the house, when you’re out, like humans, your dog feels lonely and bored and he will do anything to use all his energy.

You can also use other tricks like the “QUIET” command, which you will have to implement whenever he barks senselessly. If you’ve already established yourself as the alpha of your “pack”, then it won’t take much trouble to teach this.

If the barking becomes too much of a nuisance and is already inspiring hostility among your neighbors, then using an anti-bark collar might be acceptable, but only temporarily or only as a training supplement.

It is highly suggested that you stick to the sonar collar as it is perhaps the most humane choice of the three and also the most fool-proof one as much as anti-bark collars can get. Never forget to tackle the problem with hands-on solutions and obedience training as well. Training your dog to respond to obedience signals is still the best and lasting way to tone down incessant barking but still maintain his freedom to do what he naturally does.
