The Black Orchid

Posted By Jamie Christianson on May 28, 2009 @ 8:21 am
by Jamie Christianson

The exotic look of black orchids make it a very popular flower. This orchid is among many other species in its class that can very greatly in its appearance. Which adds to the uniqueness of this plant.

The name bulbophyllum comes from both the Greek and Latin. The greek “phyllon” means leaf descriptive of it’s form, and the latin “bulbus” means bulb-like. This is one of the largest exotic plants in the Orchidaceae, or Orchid, family. And it is also one of the largest in the entire plant kingdom. The study of the black orchid is no simple task, as they number at about 1805 species.

Bublophyllum and their many different species can vary greatly. Some variations are in their environment, growth pattern, smell, form, and their look. It can be very difficult to identify because of this. Most of the time it is identifed by looking at the specifics and the structure of the flowers on the plant.

This orchid can range from anything like a winding root climber, to an erect plant. Again, this is why it’s so important to know the specifics of identifying a true bublophyllum. This is the reason it can be very difficult for even the most experience taxonomist, and makes it even more interesting because it is such a challenge.

One more thing that varies with the black orchid is the environment in which it grows. Some different countries that they flourish in range from Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia, South America, and Papua New Guinea. Almost one third of the species orignated from Papua New Guinea. This makes the forests in Papua New Guinea diverse with these sophisticated plkants. Some of these habitats and forests are losing their natural form, which is inhibiting their growth.

Quite a few of these species are under the immediate threat of becoming extinct. There are four that are on the endangered species list, and two of those are critically endangered. The bulbophyllum filiforme is native to Cameroon and Nigeria where it grows in sub-tropical or tropical dry forests. These forests are losing their natural habitit and in turn have placed it on the critically threatened list. The bulbophyllum Kupense is also on this list. It is native to Cameroon as well, but only grows in a sub-tropical moist montane.

The black orchid is both beautiful and exotic, not to mention intricate in its design. A common person may not be able to label a black orchid as such which makes it all the more interesting to those who study them and are able to differentiate.

Preserving the environments they grow in is very important so that we will be able to continue studying this obscure and complex plant.

Pontoon Boats: Transportation of Building Materials

Posted By Chris Newman on @ 8:20 am
by Chris Newman

Sometime ago a real estate tycoon purchased a tiny island off the east coast, intending to develop it into a vacation resort. While surveying the property he decided that the island would be big enough for a small hotel with a golf course. He wanted to add a brick retaining wall to surround the property for privacy and also visual enhancement. A contractor presented the plans when the owner realized he had a big problem that he hadn’t planned for. How would he get all of the building materials from the mainland to the island? This question led to another one, how would he transport the guest to the island as well? His solution was to buy pontoon boats. He would be able to use the pontoons for transporting materials and helping the construction of the island hotel area, later having his staff transport the guest to the island. Solving two problems with one answer.

The following day our man had located a boat dealer in the area and was able to purchase three pontoon boats. A larger, more detailed pontoon boat would be delivered later for the opening of the hotel to transport the guest. The pontoon boats used for construction and transportation were basic models with fourteen feet of open work space, just what was needed to build the planned rock retaining wall. With the pontoons being open this provided a platform area for a stable work area. With the start of construction two weeks later the crew worked quickly and being so efficient was able to complete the work in a timely manner.

The workers found the pontoons especially helpful when they needed to berth in shallow waters, if they had any other type of boat, this wouldn’t be possible. But with the pontoon boats greater versatility, the workers are able to get where they need to go around the island with relative ease. The contractors are able to lay out their blueprints and work directly from the deck of the boat without fear of tipping over or falling into the water because of an unstable working platform. The pontoon boats are serving all of their needs quite well, the contractors are so impressed by the strength and durability of the pontoon boats that they are going to invest in a small fleet of pontoon boats to use the next time they receive a contract for marine construction.

The resort was completed with the estimated time frame and the owner was so impressed he gave the crew a big bonus payment, for a job well done. The owner was very impressed with the rock wall surrounding the island, the hotel was beautifully built, and just think all the materials were brought to the island by pontoon boats, the owner never thought that pontoon boats could be so helpful; he has always pictured them as a pleasure vessel. Pontoon boats are now finding their rightful place among the water vessels used for more than just cruising. People are finding many ways to use their pontoons and making the boat work for them in many instances.

How to Find Good Golf Equipment

Posted By June Karlsson on @ 8:11 am
by June Karlsson

When you begin shopping for good golf equipment, you’ll find that if you know how and where to look, it can be a very rewarding adventure. I’ve stumbled upon great deals a number of times just by dropping by summer yard sales. I’ve seen entire sets for $30. Single woods were $3. Granted, they weren’t the best of the best, but I don’t need the best of the best to play (until such time that I turn pro).

I would much rather put a couple hundred bucks in golf lessons from a professional golfer than to plop down $1200 or more for a set of clubs I may or may not use a lot.Yard sales, garage sales, auctions, and second hand stores will all have sets of golf clubs discounted. So yard and garage sales are the first place I’d look.

Next, I would scour the largest online auction site in the world,bay.com. Ebay has a great business model and a great reputation. You can find really good bargains if you know how to look. You need a little patience on Ebay because the deals may not end for five or six days from when you first start looking. At this writing, there were over 2800 golf club sets for auction. There were 11,900 golf ball sites offering their golf balls. Believe it or not, there was even a “reconditioned golf ball” category. Go search around on Ebay and you are sure to find great deals.

Amazon.com is also a good site to find a ton of people who are willing, for whatever reason, to offload a set of golf clubs for a reasonable price. The deals aren’t obvious all the time, but they do exist.

One minor disadvantage to the online sites is that you don’t get to play with the clubs before you buy. Unfortunately you don’t always know for certain what you’re getting. The advantage though is that most major online sites have modest return policies (with plenty of cautions before you actually press Buy).

Finally, the next and last place I would go to find good golf equipment is online golf sites (not Amazon-, Yahoo, or Ebay-related), These sites are specifically geared towards the game of golf. They will probably have the word ‘golf’ in the web address.

You can buy good equipment at reasonable prices but you have to be careful. Unfortunately, this is an area that you need to proceed with caution because there are a number of P.T. Barnum disciples out there (“there’s a sucker born every minute”). Be slightly skeptical about your purchases. Not everyone online is as trustworthy and honest as you. On the other hand, find the person with a ton of positive reviews and buy from him. Chances are great that your purchase will also be great. Avoid those who have very few transactions.

Snorkeling in the Caribbean

Posted By Miranda Jackson on @ 8:01 am

Nothing is as fun as going down under to see the amazing wildlife of sea creatures. The Caribbean is one of the best places to do it by snorkeling on some of the best shores in the world. We will see some of the ways to benefit from snorkeling and make it a more enjoyable experience, so read on.

To start your snorkeling adventure, you’ll need a friend to go along. Ask the staff at your resort if there are snorkel and fin rentals available- most offer them free of charge or at a nominal fee. Most Caribbean island beaches also rent this equipment to beachgoers, so you don’t really even need a resort. Getting prepared to snorkel is so easy! Make sure you’re protected from the elements- wear your sunscreen, and ideally a wet suit (but at least a long-sleeved shirt). Keep in mind, when snorkeling you’re right at the surface of the water and the sun is right over you. A lot of people don’t realize that the sun’s rays penetrate right through the water.

Wear adequate protection for your skin from the sun. Make sure you also wear a dive suit to be protected from other elements of the sea. You will hit yourself with coral reefs and rocks if you stay unprotected. Aim to snorkel with your arms on the sides for maximum enjoyment. If you want to see something more closely, just hold your breath and kick a little. If you want to continue you will need to blow out of the water to clear your lungs.

Scuba diving may be fun, but snorkeling is more easier and is more safer for people who are as yet amateurs to the activity. It takes mostly just 10 minutes to get you ready and set for your first session snorkeling in the water. If you get a good instructor you can learn most of the techniques in a few hours.

After you learn how to snorkel effectively, it’s time to move on to the bigger leagues and have your first scuba dive. You kost note that diving may be a little advanced as well as more expensive than snorkeling.

If you aren’t a scuba diver, snorkeling will provide a great way to view the underwater world. If you are trying to decide where to go on your next vacation, a snorkeling trip to the Caribbean might be right for you.

Betts

Posted By Denise I Smithson on @ 6:47 am
by Denise I Smithson

Drafted by the New York Rangers in the 2005-2006 season, Blair Betts plays the 4th defensive line and is known as one of the best face-off men in the entire NHL.

The New York Post wrote that Blair Betts and his teammate, Sjostrom, could be the best penalty kill tandem in Rangers history and they had a franchise high of 87.6 percent. He has also been declared one of the most underrated players in the league.

Betts played for the Calgary Flames from 1998 to 2005 before being drafted by the New York Rangers. His professional career began in 2001. Regardless of which team he plays on, the Edmonton native is well known as a strong defensive center.

The New York Rangers, however, have not done so well. They are going through their highest losing streak, so it may be hard to determine where some of the praise for Blair Betts is translating into winning games for the team.

Blair Betts has been also plagued with injuries, suffering a broken orbital bone around his left eye in May, 2008, and recovering from an upper body injury in December, 2008. Prior to that injury, he had three goals and five points in 28 games this past season. In his fourth season with the New York Rangers, he has missed time with injuries to his knee, foot and face.

As everyone knows, NHL play is rough and injuries are relatively common, particularly in defensive players. Only 28, Betts has seen plenty of the ice since he began playing with the Calgary Flames back in 1998.

He actually began his career in 1996 playing for the Prince George Cougars in the Western Hockey League, before being drafted by the Flames in the 1998 NHL draft. Some may wonder if it is taking a toll on his health and ability to be a consistent player.

In the 2005-06 NHL hockey season, he scored eight goals and two assists with the New York Rangers. Since that time, he has been used primarily on special teams and has done well in penalty killing and winning face-offs.

In his NHL career, Betts has racked up 27 goals and 18 assists, mostly while playing for the New York Rangers. The Rangers are going through tough times at the moment – and his being sidelined for injuries is probably not helping matters any. However, many believe that the Rangers have a great defensive line; but it is their offense which is not up to snuff.

Experts blame the Rangers last place position on a lack of confidence and a failure of the players to gel as a team. Whether Blair Betts can do much to help bring the Rangers out of the slump remains to be seen. Other players, and Rangers General Manager, Sather could shoulder much of the blame. Blair Betts has a lot of work cut out for him with this team, and could probably do better on one that would do him justice.

Getting Your Snowboarding Equipment Right

Posted By Matt Gio on @ 6:11 am
by Matt Gio

It’s no myth that there is lots of equipment a snowboarder needs to buy before making his first trip to the mountains, most of which can be pretty expensive. Therefore, choosing the right equipment for you on the first purchase is very important since money no longer grows on trees. Snowboarding equipment is not only about comfort, it’s also about safety. A mountain can provide you with all kinds of hazardous conditions – frigid weather, trees, cliffs, other snowboarders, and even wilderness. Although this isn’t a complete list of snowboarding equipment, I’ve composed a list of some of the more essential items when hitting the slopes.

Snowboard: Of course when you go snowboarding, it’s a no brainer that you need a snowboard. However, snowboards come in many different styles, so it’s not as basic as just choosing any old snowboard. Make sure the snowboard is an extension of your body. You want to be as comfortable as possible with your snowboard. The more awkward a snowboard feels beneath your feet, the worse of a snowboarder you’ll be, and more importantly you run the greater risk of getting hurt.

Bindings: Just like the snowboard, the bindings are necessary to snowboarding. Without your bindings, your boots would have nothing strapping them down to the board. Make sure your bindings are durable. The old adage holds true here – spending a little more the first time will save you money in the long run. The last thing you want is to end up on top of the mountain with a broken binding and having to make the entire trip down the mountain walking.

Boots: A nice pair of comfortable boots will ensure you a long day out on the mountain. When deciding on a boot, make sure to check that it is durable, waterproof, light in weight, and ventilated. Also, don’t make the mistake of buying boots that don’t fit your bindings.

Socks: Although greatly underestimated, a good pair of socks is crucial. Your toes are one of the first points on your body where frost bite can set in, so buying a warm pair of socks is very important. Synthetic socks are your best bet, but wool socks can be a cheaper alternative.

Goggles: Goggles will protect your eyes from a variety of hazardous conditions. On a windy day, your eyes can dry out and make it hard to see. Snow could fall into your eyes and hamper your vision. And most dangerously, your eye could get poked by a tree branch and do irrepairable damage. Don’t underestimate the importance of eye protection.

Coat/Pants: Although snowboard equipment such as your coat and pants have become a lot more about fashion over the years, make sure you choose gear that is functional before fashionable.

Hat/Gloves: Just like the coat and pants, when buying a hat and gloves, go for function. Every snowboarder has their own personal preference when it comes to hats and gloves, but there is no need to go overboard with price on these. Choose what feels most comfortable, with your only goal in mind is to make sure they are water resistant.

Avalance Transponder: If you’re snowboarding on a mountain that has an avalanche risk, an avalanche transponder can be a vital piece of snowboarding equipment. This device will alert the rescue squad of your location in case of an avalanche and begin the search.

Non Beach Island Activities

Posted By Matthew Kepnes on @ 6:05 am
by Matthew Kepnes

Most people visit tropical islands to get a taste of activities like fishing, shelling, and sunbathing. Still, many tourists aren’t aware that there are many more activities other than just spending a perfect day on the beach all day. There’s more to a tropical island apart from the beach, and, if you are looking for something else to do, you’ll never run out of options.

Tropical destinations offer you a lot of different types of activities you can do. You can go on a food trip and try the authentic cuisine of that particular island. This is one of the best ways to experience the local culture. Since there’s a close relationship between food and culture, so an interesting way to learn about it is to try your hand at cooking local food. Attend a cooking class as an alternative to going to the beach.

Shopping is another good option. Purchasing from any of the tropical island destinations – from a luxurious department store to an overtly aggressive street vendor can be an interesting and unforgettable experience. You can purchase one of a kind clothes and items from the island, which make great gifts. Most of the tourist spots on the island will be dotted with at least one on-site gift shop or a variety of vendor stalls selling items from t-shirts and handicraft items to postcards and other standard merchandise. Top of the line, finer, and more valuable items such as diamond solitaires, Swiss watches, crystal, and perfumes can be purchased all over most tropical islands.

If you’re on the lookout for more interesting things to do, tropical island destinations also have a lot of extraordinary attractions for visitors who are interested in delving deeper into the history and culture of that specific place. Most tropical desintaitons will have cultural history museums and historic buildings where you can learn a lot about the island’s past.

Your body may be on vacation, but it doesnt mean you have to be lazy. Get up and get outside to explore nature. The natural landscape of an island doesnt stop at the beach, but extends far inward. Try hiking through the jungle. Relax in some waterfalls. Climb a mountain. Go cycling around the island communities. There are a lot of things to do on an island and many things to see beyond the beach.

The majority of tropical island destinations encourage visitors to pamper yourself and take a day or two just to relax and let go of your worries. Tropical islands are beach destinations. However, there’s more to a tropical island than that. Do some of the activities mentioned here and enjoy everything in island has to offer, not just the beach

Big Carp Baits And Improving Your Catches!

Posted By Tim Richardson on @ 6:00 am
by Tim Richardson

A thought-provoking piece about carp baits, nutritional stimulation, improving fish weights, and much improved catch results!

Scientific tests on carp feeding and nutrition often involve protein-rich foods based on casein and gelatine, but you have to ask how many of these tests involve bloodworm, zooplankton, algae, mussels, snails, all forms of insect larvae and aquatic weeds fish etc that fish thrive on. Such natural food items are easily detected by carp due to evolutionary adaptation through millennia and carp can derive maximum nutrition from these foods and digest them very efficiently indeed, and we can exploit all this in our bait use and design! We can certainly improve our catches by exploiting not only the nutritional impacts of natural food items and their profiles of stimulating substances, but by how we apply our baits and manipulate natural carp feeding behaviours also!

Many anglers think about their baits in terms of nutrition but really miss the other points about actual feeding stimulation processes and mechanisms. In the real world, what if you have raised the level of natural food organisms available because of the abundance of fishing baits fed into a lake? What if the fish can pick and choose whether they actually need fishing baits to supply any needs at all at any particular point in the year?

When I look back to my early carp fishing days of the 1970′s I recall using a bucket of ground bait made from bread crumbs, perhaps cans of sweetcorn or luncheon meat or various special pastes, particle baits like wheat, pearl barley, hemp or live baits like worms or maggots. In the last 30 years carp fishing has exploded into a highly commercialised activity, and today introducing many kilograms of boilies, pellets or particle baits among others, all produce fish. Having seen someone catch a forty pound carp from a UK water, just ten minutes after introducing 20 kilograms of soluble pellets into his swim (done under suitable circumstances,) made me appreciate even more how heavy baiting can be truly decisive in many big and wary carp captures!

It is true that the majority of the fish you could fish available to you prior to the boom in carp fishing in the UK were of double and single figures and it has been said that at that time there were as many twenty pound fish in Kent waters as the rest of the waters in the UK put together. New carp anglers in the UK today could never fully appreciate just what an achievement catching a twenty pound carp meant back in the 1970′s and early 1980′s; and the opportunity to actually fish a water that held a thirty pound fish was incredibly exciting experience! To many carp anglers fishing just a couple of decades ago, the first challenge was actually to locate a water containing any big carp over twenty or thirty pounds at all, and it might seem crazy to consider that to me it was once an exhilarating thrill to fish a water containing fish over twenty pounds, now having hooked a carp over eighty pounds a couple of years ago.

Not so long ago the capture of twenty carp of over twenty pounds in a season was a milestone few of even the top anglers had achieved. It is astounding to me today looking back, that you can catch twenty carp of around twenty pounds or over on certain UK waters in just a week or less; and this is very much due to the impact of the highly nutritional free baits applied by carp anglers over recent decades. Correct bait application is a massive edge which simply cannot be underestimated but is often extremely under-rated!

I just realised it is now 18 years since I had a personal milestone catch of twenty carp whose average weight was just less than twenty pounds, including a mid-thirty pound carp, in just 5 days. My homemade bait recipe design especially, and the way I introduced my free baits, made all the difference in achieving this exceptional catch at that Essex syndicate water back in 1991 and UK carp have had twenty years since to grow fat on the tonnes of bait very many thousands more carp anglers have been introducing to UK carp waters all year round! If you consider that carp soon get very conditioned to baits and practice avoiding hook baits in many carp waters 24 hours a day, the significance of knowing that bit more about bait, how it works, and how to apply it in new and creative ways is obviously highly important to consistent success today.

Bait design is very important and the nature of the free baits you use in order to get fish into an excited feeding state and drawn into your swim, hopefully to make a mistake with your hook bait is crucial; even in exceptionally prolific French and Spanish waters where 60 fish of over twenty pounds has been achieved by my friends in just 3 days. In the UK high-profile anglers are very much promoters of innovative baits and applications and the leverage of various bait substances and forms of recipes is a very big part of their ongoing success. Bait is important not merely as an edge in itself but as the whole basis of your ongoing success and so belittling the subject is rather missing the point that carp senses can be manipulated in our favour over and over again big-time…

How To Become An NFL Player

Posted By Audri Whites on @ 5:42 am
by Audri Brown

Did you know that among the 7 million high school students who registered in the National Federation of State High School Association, only about 250 of them make it to the NFL? Can you imagine how little that percentage is and how tough it is to qualify in the pro football? But before losing your hopes, here are some tips for you to know to get a bigger chance of becoming an NFL player.

Be a good student. Before hatching the eggs, first go back to the reality and do well in your studies. Although you can be an NFL player if you are still an undergrad, there is a survey that those guys who earned a degree were paid 20% to 30% higher compared to others who didn’t earn a degree. There are so many explanations why is that so, but indeed, education is one vital aspect of being a successful NFL player.

Education is not enough. Aside from education, of course, there are many other important things to consider. To qualify in the NFL, you should also be physically fit, a good team player, and has self discipline.

Be Healthy. Eating a well balanced diet is not enough. You should also undergo trainings and exercises to help build your stamina. Though not necessary, you can opt to seek a sports nutritionist’s advice to know what’s the best diet and workout for you.

Sportsmanship. If you are a fair, good team player, and respects your coach, then you are a true sportsman. If you do get along very well with your fellow athletes, then that characteristic can also give you a chance to be a part of the NFL roster.

Being well-disciplined. Aside from being disciplined with your body and inside the field, this discipline we’re talking about is how a player lives his life off the field. Is he a good citizen in their community? Does he have any charitable involvements? Aside from these, indeed there are so many other things to consider if an individual is truly disciplined or not.

So there are the hints. Surely, there are many motives why these young gentlemen dream of becoming an NFL star.

Here is one obvious reason.

NFL players are thought to be one of the highest paid individuals on earth. Yes they may be earning a lot, but actually, not as much as what most people think. The starters usually are paid higher compared to the backups. Also, salary depends if he’s a rookie or a veteran player. It also depends on how much of the portion the team’s salary cap is allotted for you. And so many other factors that an NFL team considers. But surely, not all NFL players are millionaires.

And now you know the truth. So what? It’s still a good profession to pursue. So you pursue with your dream, but unfortunately didn’t make it. Will I lose hope and shift to another career?

If you still want to be a part of the NFL, you can try pursuing your career for each team’s front office by being one of their staffs. You can also take into consider being a scouts agent, sports announcer, photographers, or any job that would drive you nearest to the NFL world.

At the end, you shouldn’t be upset whether you have reached your NFL dream or not. The tips given above were very much important in getting a good career, not just for pro football. Just keep in your mind, that you are indeed special and unique in your own way. If you didn’t get through to the NFL, there may be somewhere else in which you can excel more, where you can prove and further nourish your potentials.
